How it is computed

  1. 1GUS pricesAverage annual retail prices from the GUS Local Data Bank – a national average of quotes for a specific product and pack size. An individual shop can differ by tens of percent.
  2. 2Purchasing powerUnits = gross wage (minimum or average) ÷ product price in the same year. I use gross because both wages are published gross; net would mean fewer units, but the ratio between years stays similar.

Frequently asked questions

What does bread cost in Poland?

According to GUS, a 0.5 kg wheat-rye loaf averaged PLN 5.38 in 2025, against PLN 2.20 in 2015. Other products are in the table above.

Does a wage buy more than ten years ago?

It depends on the product and the wage. A minimum wage buys more of almost everything, as it outpaced prices. An average wage buys more petrol, electricity, milk and sugar, but less bread than in 2015. Across the whole basket the average wage buys about 46 % more in real terms.

Why did bread rise faster than inflation?

Labour, energy and transport make up much of the price of bread, and they rose faster than the average basket – especially in 2022–2023. The raw material (flour) is only part of a loaf’s price.
